Where to play, depending on what you want

Best if you want a court that is not a tennis court

Garner Park, and only Garner Park. Six dedicated outdoor pickleball courts on asphalt. The City states plainly that Garner "offers Madison's only dedicated outdoor pickleball courts", and its page dates them to 2016 as the city's first. That means a proper pickleball net at the proper height, no tennis lines to read through, and no chance of arriving to find the court booked for a tennis lesson. It is on the west side, off S. Rosa Rd, on a park whose greater part rises along a knoll to an overlook.

Best if you want to book a court in advance

The Warner Park Community Recreation Center was the first venue in this entire directory you could reserve, and it is still one of very few. Five indoor courts (two in the Blue Gym, three in the Green Gym, each 20ft by 44ft), booked through the City's WebTrac account system. It is also the only one that asks something of you first: an active WPCRC ID card, plus either a Fitness Center/Pickleball membership or a Daily Admission. Neither price is published on the page we read, so ring ahead if the cost matters.

Best if you are playing after dark

Tenney Park is the only outdoor venue in Madison whose courts the City marks as lit: "Courts: 3, asphalt, lighted". Three courts on 38 acres along the Yahara River on the near east side, in a park the City describes for its "storybook scenery" and boat-watching. Every other outdoor venue in the city reads "not stated" on lighting, which means Madison has not said either way rather than that the courts are dark.

Best if you are bringing a group

Brittingham Park has four courts on asphalt, the largest shared-court count still standing in Madison after three larger sites fell out on address checks. It stretches along Monona Bay just west of downtown, with a beach, boat rentals and an accessible playground, and its courts have their own address, 388 S. Bassett St., separate from the park's main entrance at 829 W. Washington Ave. If four is not enough, Garner's six are the only larger set in the city.

Parking

Madison publishes nothing about parking at any of these twenty-three venues. What the park pages do give you is the size of the park you are heading into. Elver Park is 250 acres and Warner Park 213, both with substantial internal road networks. Norman Clayton is 3.44 acres, Reynolds 3.58 and Waunona 5.13; at that size, treat parking as street parking.

When to turn up

No demand figures are published, but Madison states the rule that decides your afternoon: "While the courts are available for individuals on a first-come, first-served basis, all leagues and lessons must reserve in advance." An outdoor court can be taken by a booking, and the City does not publish where those bookings are. Nineteen of the twenty outdoor venues are shared with tennis; only Garner Park's six courts are all yours to queue for.

What you will actually find

Madison is the first city in this directory that answers the surface question at all, and it answers it for every outdoor venue. Two of the twenty are what the City calls "sport court tile", a modular surface laid over a base, which plays faster and drains differently from asphalt. What the City does not publish is condition: no resurfacing dates, no crack notes, no assessment of which court is best kept.

Getting into a game

Two dates tell the story. Madison's first dedicated pickleball courts opened at Garner Park in 2016, and they are still the city's only dedicated outdoor courts a decade later. Everything else outdoors is a tennis court with lines added, and Madison publishes the detail that dual-striped courts "use a tennis net which is about 2" taller than a standard pickleball net". Nobody else in this directory has mentioned it, and it is the difference between a dink that clears and one that does not.

The second date is the expansion of the Warner Park Community Recreation Center, which added five indoor courts across two gyms and, with them, the first bookable pickleball court anywhere on this site. Nine cities in, every other court in the directory has been first come, first served.

What we don’t know yet

Anything an operator does not publish shows as “Not stated” rather than being guessed at, most often surface, fees and opening hours. Many of these courts are very probably free to play, but a belief is not a source, so we do not print it as one.

Questions people actually ask

How many pickleball courts does Madison have?

Sixty-seven across twenty-three City of Madison venues: 62 outdoor and 5 indoor. Honolulu is the largest city in this directory by venue count now, at thirty-five; Madison remains one of the larger ones.

What are the courts made of?

Asphalt at eighteen of the twenty outdoor venues, and "sport court tile" at Reynolds Park and Westmorland Park. Madison is the only city in this directory that states a surface for every venue it lists. The indoor gym floors at the Warner Park Community Recreation Center are not described, so those read "not stated".

Can I book a court?

Indoors, yes: the five courts at the Warner Park Community Recreation Center are reservable through the City's WebTrac system, and they are among the few bookable courts anywhere on this site. Outdoors, no: individuals play first come, first served.

Why is Reindahl Park missing, and why did Door Creek and Rennebohm arrive late?

This directory requires a street address that resolves before it will publish a venue, and the US Census address file returns no match for 7035 Littlemore Dr, 1818 Portage Rd or 115 N Eau Claire Ave. On 4 September 2026 a second resolver was added: OpenStreetMap. It resolves Door Creek and Rennebohm, so their fourteen courts publish from that date. It does not resolve 1818 Portage Rd, so Reindahl Park and its eight courts are still refused.

Wider area

Madison sits in Dane County. Every venue in the county, including these, is listed on Dane County. There is no Wisconsin state page yet either. A state page needs at least three published cities before it is a document rather than a copy of this one, and Wisconsin has fewer than that today, so we have not written one.
