About this place

Six dedicated pickleball courts on asphalt: the only dedicated outdoor pickleball courts in Madison, and the city's first. The City states both facts itself. Its pickleball page says "Garner Park offers Madison's only dedicated outdoor pickleball courts", and the park's own page dates them: "Madison's first dedicated pickleball courts, located in Garner Park, opened in 2016." Everything else outdoors in this city is a tennis court with lines added. Garner is 41.83 acres on the west side, most of it rising along a knoll to an overlook where the award-winning park shelter sits, and it is the home of Opera in the Park.

Getting there

333 S. Rosa Rd., Madison, WI 53705, matched by the Census geocoder to Madison city, Dane County. The park's shelter is reservable for picnics and gatherings, which implies vehicle access, but the City publishes nothing about parking here or at any other Madison pickleball venue. Note the park is on a knoll: the courts and the overlook are not at the same elevation.

What to expect

The only place in Madison where you are playing on a pickleball court rather than a tennis court: a proper net at the proper height, no tennis lines to read through, and six courts, which is enough for a genuine rotation. Individuals play first come, first served; leagues and lessons must reserve in advance, and with six dedicated courts this is the likeliest venue in the city to have one of those running. Neither lighting nor whether nets are provided is stated. On a summer evening, note that Opera in the Park draws crowds to this park specifically.

Questions about Garner Park

Are these really dedicated courts?

Yes, and the City says so twice. Its pickleball page states that "Garner Park offers Madison's only dedicated outdoor pickleball courts", and the park page records them as Madison's first, opened in 2016.

Why does that matter?

Because a dual-striped court uses a tennis net, which Madison notes is about two inches taller than a standard pickleball net. At Garner the net is the right height and the lines are the only lines. Nineteen of the city's twenty outdoor venues are the other kind.

Are the courts lit?

Not stated. Even Madison's flagship pickleball site carries no lighting statement; only Tenney Park's line ends in "lighted".

Do you run Garner Park?

What claiming does and does not doShow less

You can claim this listing and correct anything on it. To be clear about what claiming does and does not do: it gives you control of your own facts and a channel to reach us, and it is shown on the page as confirmed by the venue with the date you confirmed it.

It does not mark the listing verified, because a claim tells us who you are rather than checking what is here, and those are different things. It also buys no ranking, no sorting and no placement advantage over an unclaimed venue. The moment claiming bought position this would be an advertising product rather than a directory, and the whole promise would be gone.

Something wrong here?

If you play here and this is out of date, tell us. Corrections come with a source and a date attached, the same as everything else, and a correction that changes a court count gets checked against the city record before it goes live.
