Pickleball Courts in Texas

Texas has 254 counties. This page covers four cities in five of them.

Seventy-one venue entries, 315 courts. Travis County holds twenty-seven venues and ninety courts, all inside Austin. Two more Austin parks, North Lake Creek and Springwoods, sit across the line in Williamson County with three courts between them, so Austin publishes twenty-nine venues and ninety-three courts. Dallas County holds twenty-four entries and ninety-six courts, all inside Dallas. Harris County holds ten venues and eighty-three courts, all inside Houston. Bexar County holds eight venues and forty-three courts, all inside San Antonio.

Who publishes differs by city. Austin's page calls itself the list of "official Austin Parks and Recreation Department pickleball locations" and carries a second section, "Pickleball Programming at Rec Centers", from which seven recreation centres are published; the one private venue is The Picklr Austin West. San Antonio's eight are all City parks. Dallas is twenty-one City entries and three private rooms. Houston is the reverse: three City recreation centres and seven clubs and commercial venues, and the clubs hold seventy of the city's eighty-three courts. Eleven of the seventy-one entries statewide are not municipal, and they hold ninety-five courts.

Two things about the record are named rather than smoothed over. In Dallas three names appear twice at one address each, Churchill Park, Fretz Tennis Center and Walnut Hill Park, and Campbell Green Park appears at two addresses, the park's and the recreation centre's, so twenty-four entries stand on twenty names and ninety-six is the count of the entries. In Austin the South Austin and Gus Garcia recreation centres share an address with the park outside them, and each pair is published as two entries, one indoor and one outdoor.

Each city's own page names courts that are not here. Dallas lists Friendship Park with "2 pickleball courts", Fair Oaks and Willis Winters with four multi-use courts each, McCree with one, and ten more parks at "2 multi-use courts", none of them checked. Houston's page lists Alief, Judson Robinson Jr., Kendal, Moody, North Wayside and West Gray indoors and a run of two-court outdoor parks. San Antonio lists Piazza Italia Park, whose address "500 Columbus" is found by neither the Census address file nor OpenStreetMap, and Hamilton Community Center, which has hours and no count. Austin lists Balcones District Park without a number, and its Alamo, Austin and Montopolis recreation centres are not in the record.

Beyond the four cities, nothing in Texas is published. Fort Worth, El Paso, Arlington, Plano, Corpus Christi, Lubbock and the rest of the state have no file behind this page, which is a statement about a reading list rather than about their courts.

No Texas operator read for this page writes about heat, rain or a season for a court. What they write is a clock, a lighting word at some venues and an indoor count at others, and this section is built from those and nothing else.

The clocks are long. Austin prints "Open Play: 7 Days a Week, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m." at fifteen of its twenty-one parks, and San Antonio's eight parks all print "Sunday - Saturday: 5 a.m. - 11 p.m." under the City directory's rule that "All other courts are available during park hours." Dallas prints no hours for any park; its facility pages list "Pickleball Court(s)" among the amenities with a "Make a Reservation" link and no clock. The commercial rooms run later: Paddle Club in Dallas and Elite Pickleball Club in Houston to midnight, The Picklr Austin West "6:00 AM - 11:00 PM" every day. Bumpy Pickle in Houston opens at 4 p.m. on weekdays, an evening venue by its own timetable.

Lighting is stated at sixteen of the seventy-one venues, eighty-seven courts, and stated unlit at none. Eleven are Austin parks carrying "Lighted during park hours", forty courts in all. San Antonio's Fairchild and Tejeda parks carry "lighted" in the City's own count sentences, twenty-four courts. Houston's three are private: Bay Oaks Country Club's "eight dedicated outdoor pickleball courts, all equipped with lighting for evening play", Bumpy Pickle's nine, and East River 9's "6 courts with LED lights for evening play". Dallas states nothing about lighting at any of its twenty-four entries. The other fifty-five venues read lighting not stated, which means nobody has said, not that the courts are dark.

Indoors, Texas has 101 courts at sixteen venues, a little under a third of the state's total. Houston holds fifty-four of them at five venues, Austin thirty-one at seven, Dallas fourteen at three, and San Antonio two at Palm Heights Park. Austin's indoor courts are gym floors. The City writes "1 Multi-Purpose Indoor Court with striping for 4 pickleball courts" at South Austin Recreation Center and the same form at Gus Garcia and Northwest, and each is open for pickleball only in a published window, "Tuesday, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m." at South Austin. Houston's City rooms work the same way: Fonde on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings, Tidwell "Mon., Tue., & Fri. 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m." A gym is a pickleball venue during those hours and not otherwise.

Not one operator page read for this note uses the words air conditioning or climate control, and the record carries no climate answer at any venue. Of the 315 courts, 208 at fifty-four venues are stated outdoor. Tejeda Park's six are stated lit and neither indoor nor outdoor, so they sit on no side of this count.

The largest pickleball site in Texas is a private one. Elite Pickleball Club in the Houston Heights publishes "a total of 24 indoor pickleball courts" across two buildings on W. 6th Street, Elite-8 at 610 and Elite-16 at 650, and the record carries all twenty-four at 610. It is open to midnight six nights a week and reserves through a membership. Fairchild Park in San Antonio is the largest public site, "18 lighted, outdoor pickleball courts" beside ten lit tennis courts, open 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. first come, first served. It is also the largest venue in the state where the operator states that every court is both lit and outdoor.

Houston's other large rooms are Pickleball Country Club, "13 premiere courts" indoors on Kinghurst Dr with a "BOOK A COURT" button and hours to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and Fonde Recreation Center's eight indoor City courts. Dallas's two twelves are tennis centres: LB Houston Tennis Center with "12 multi-use courts" and Samuell Grand with "4 pickleball courts" and "8 multi-use courts", both under the City's heading "Paid Facilities" with "fees apply". The City's Tennis page names the centres and says only "Please contact the Tennis Center for Schedules and Prices".

Dallas's park courts are the plainest list in the state. Under "Dedicated Pickleball Courts (Free)" the City prints Campbell Green 4, Churchill 4, Cole 6, Kiest 4 and Lake Highlands North 4, the last now Walne Park; under "Multi-Use Courts (Tennis/Pickleball)" it prints "2 multi-use courts" at park after park. "Outdoor courts are free to use and available on a first-come, first-served basis." Every facility page beneath that list says "Pickleball Court(s)" and never a number.

Austin's notable public site is the Austin Tennis and Pickleball Center at Walnut Creek Sports Park, eight lit outdoor courts and the one Austin entry marked "Reservations Required". Its notable private one is The Picklr Austin West, "11 dedicated courts, purpose-built for indoor pickleball" on FM 620, open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., and the one operator page read for this note that prints a dollar amount for a court, "$99/month" for the entry plan and a fifteen-day trial for $30.

Three Houston venues are lit outdoor sites run as businesses: Bumpy Pickle's nine courts beside five sand volleyball courts, East River 9's six with LED lights at a par-3 golf course, and Bay Oaks Country Club's eight, "available exclusively to Members and their guests". Tower Club Dallas's "Pickleball in the Sky" is one indoor court on the 48th floor at 1601 Elm St, and its operator's release says the court "can be rented by both members and non-members".

No Texas operator on this page prints a construction date, a bond or a planned court count. What the pages print is the shape of provision, dedicated, striped, a gym on a timetable or a business, and the four cities differ on it.

Dallas has written the distinction down. Its pickleball page sorts the City's courts into "Dedicated Pickleball Courts (Free)", "Paid Facilities" and "Multi-Use Courts (Tennis/Pickleball)". Thirty of the eighty-two City courts published here are on the dedicated list, thirty-two are at three tennis centres, and the remaining twenty are the "2 multi-use courts" lines at nine parks, Walnut Hill counted twice. Lake Highlands North Park, four dedicated courts on the City's list, is published as Walne Park under the name the City now uses.

Austin's growth is indoors and on gym floors. The City's "Pickleball Programming at Rec Centers" section counts courts as stripes: "1 Multi-Purpose Indoor Court with striping for 4 pickleball courts" at South Austin, "1 Multi-purpose Indoor Courts with striping for 3 pickleball courts" at Gus Garcia and at Northwest, each with an open-play window of a few hours a week. Dottie Jordan Recreation Center publishes "2 Outdoor Tennis Courts. Nets, paddles, and balls available for checkout", a tennis court that becomes pickleball when the desk lends the net. Outdoors, the City's park list splits dedicated courts from striped ones, and thirty-nine of its sixty park courts are lines on a shared slab.

Houston's growth is commercial. Seven of its ten published venues are clubs or businesses and they hold seventy of its eighty-three courts. Drop Shots HTX writes "Our 6 indoor courts are now open for play", with a bar and a "3,000 square foot covered patio" described as still under construction. Elite Pickleball Club's second building lists "The Last Serve Bar" as "opening soon". PKL Social pairs four courts with "a scratch kitchen, weekend brunch, signature cocktails". Bay Oaks says "Pickleball leagues and social tournaments run seasonally". None of these pages dates its opening.

Dallas's private rooms are the same shape, smaller: Preston Playhouse's "9 indoor pickleball courts" on Preston Rd booking through CourtReserve, Paddle Club's "Four Courts" open to midnight, and the single "Pickleball in the Sky" court that Tower Club Dallas announced on 29 June 2023 as "featured at the club for the month of July" and still publishes.

San Antonio publishes no change at all: a count sentence, park hours and a first-come rule, and a directory that says "11 Result(s) Found" and serves ten.

What would change this page most is a record rather than a build: the two-court parks Dallas and Houston already list, the Austin centres without a number, a lighting word from Dallas, a price from any City, and the rest of Texas.
