Pickleball Courts in Wake County, NC

Wake County is one of the most thoroughly covered counties in this directory, and one of the few with more than one operator. Nineteen sites hold 77 pickleball courts across three municipalities: eleven parks and 44 courts run by Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, five facilities and 21 courts run by the Town of Apex, and three parks and 12 courts run by the Town of Cary.

All three publish their own court counts, which is the bar a venue has to clear here, and they do it three different ways. Raleigh states each location's count on a single pickleball page and the citywide total in prose, and the parts add up to the whole. Apex publishes a table with a column each for indoor or outdoor, lights and number of courts. Cary states each count in the features list of the facility's page and nowhere else.

Every park's county was resolved individually rather than assumed. Raleigh reaches into Durham County at Brier Creek and the town of Apex spans Wake and Chatham, so "a Raleigh address" and "an Apex address" are both unsafe shorthand for Wake. All nineteen came back Wake, FIPS 37183.

The courts cluster hard, and the clustering is the most useful thing to know here. Sanderford Road Park in south-east Raleigh holds 10 of the 77 on its own. Five more sites hold six apiece: Method Community Park, North Hills Park and Baileywick Park in Raleigh, McCrimmon Park in Cary and Pleasant Park in Apex. Six sites out of nineteen account for 40 courts, more than half the county at under a third of its locations. The rest is threes and fours.

Dedicated pickleball is rarer than the totals suggest. Raleigh describes only Method, North Hills and Sanderford Road as permanent courts, Cary describes only McCrimmon's as lighted pickleball courts in their own right, and in Apex two of the five sites share their surface with junior tennis. The county also holds the first indoor pickleball in this directory: four courts at the John M. Brown Community Center in Apex, for players aged 55 and over during designated open gym hours. The largest site in Apex, Pleasant Park's six courts, is the only unlit one in that town, closing thirty minutes after sunset while smaller lit sites run to 10 p.m.

Three municipalities is not a county. Holly Springs, Garner, Wake Forest, Morrisville, Fuquay-Varina, Knightdale, Zebulon and Rolesville are all in Wake County and none appears here. Two of those have been looked at and turned down. Holly Springs publishes four outdoor courts at one complex and indoor open play with "up to three nets" at another, which is one countable venue where a city page needs three. Wake Forest states 18 active courts across four entries, but three of those four are at Flaherty Park, so counting them as three venues to clear a three-venue threshold would be gaming the threshold rather than meeting it.

Inside the three towns covered here, the gaps are specific. Two Cary venues with stated court counts are unpublished because the town prints no street address for them, and one of those hosts professional tour events. Apex Elementary School's four courts are unpublished because it is not a town facility and the records disagree about the number. There is no stated fee for any of the 77 courts, and a surface for exactly one of the nineteen sites.
