The Neighborhood Park on McCrimmon Parkway, by default rather than by a close contest. It is the only one of the three Cary parks whose pickleball courts the town describes as lighted, and at six courts it is the largest. It is also the site of Cary's Monday evening open play, 7 to 9 p.m. The courts are non-reservable and first-come, first-served, unlike the tennis court next to them, which can be reserved sixteen hours in advance.

Best if you are new to the town

Ed Yerha Park, which the town describes as the home of Cary's outdoor pickleball courts and where the status board says the courts are open on a first-come, first-served basis. Three courts and restrooms on site. It closes at sunset with no extension published, so it is a daylight venue. It was formerly White Oak Park, renamed for a former councilmember.

Best if you know what parking is like

Carpenter Park is one of only two venues in this entire directory whose operator publishes how many cars fit (Kirkland's Everest Park is the other): "Parking for 30 Cars". Three pickleball courts, shared with basketball on multi-sport slabs, plus a restroom structure and a picnic shelter. No lighting is stated for the courts, so plan for daylight.

Carpenter Park's features list states "Parking for 30 Cars", which is one of only two capacity figures any operator in this directory has given us for a pickleball site, and thirty spaces for a sixteen-acre park with a playground, a community garden, pedestrian trails and three pickleball courts is worth knowing before you drive out on a Saturday.

Neither of the other two parks states a capacity, a time limit, a permit requirement or a fee. Ed Yerha Park's page lists restrooms and a picnic shelter but says nothing about where to leave a car. The park on McCrimmon Parkway describes paved loop trails, a community garden and public art without mentioning parking at all.

When to turn up

Two of the three parks close at dusk. Ed Yerha Park publishes its hours as "Sunrise to Sunset", with no extension at all. Carpenter Park and the McCrimmon Parkway park extend those hours only in lighted areas, where visitors are taking part in an approved extended-use activity, until thirty minutes after it ends or 11 p.m., whichever comes first.

Only McCrimmon states lighting on its pickleball courts, so it is the one park where an evening game is a published possibility. Its features list marks those courts "Non-reservable, first-come, first-served", while the tennis court beside them is reservable sixteen hours ahead. Cary runs open play there on Monday evenings, 7 to 9 p.m.

What you will actually find

What the town does describe is the shape of the provision. Carpenter Park's three courts are multi-sport, sharing their surface with basketball: "Multi-Sport Courts: Basketball & 3 Pickleball Courts". The lines under your feet there are not all yours. Ed Yerha Park lists one basketball slab and three pickleball courts as separate features, and the town calls it the home of "Cary's outdoor Pickleball courts". McCrimmon's are described as pickleball courts in their own right, beside a separate lighted tennis court.

Getting into a game

Cary calls itself one of the country's premier destinations for pickleball, and Cary Tennis Park hosts the Professional Pickleball Association tour. Pickleball University runs instructional classes from beginner 101 up to the 400 level, taught by IPTPA-certified instructors.

There is a Cary Pickleball League in spring and summer, a Ladies' Ladder League in autumn and spring, and a Senior 55-plus mixed doubles ladder in summer, plus five one-day Royal Court tournaments a year, from Queen of the Creek in March to Dames of the Creekdom in October. Open play is Sunday afternoons 3:30 to 5:30 at Cary Tennis Park and Monday evenings 7 to 9 at McCrimmon. Much of that programme runs at two venues this page cannot publish.

How many pickleball courts does Cary have?

Twelve, across three town parks: six at the Neighborhood Park on McCrimmon Parkway, three at Ed Yerha Park and three at Carpenter Park. That is not all of Cary's pickleball. The town also states four lighted courts at Cary Tennis Park and three indoor rental courts at Middle Creek Community Center, neither of which is published here.

Why is Cary Tennis Park not on this page?

Because the town publishes no street address for it. Its facility page, its pickleball page and its court reservations page all leave the address out. The town does state that it has four lighted pickleball courts and that it hosts the Professional Pickleball Association tour. It goes in the day the town prints an address.

Is there indoor pickleball in Cary?

Yes, at Middle Creek Community Center. The town rents three courts in the South Gym at $10 per hour per court, or $15 with a ball machine, with a maximum of eight people per court. The times are Thursday and Friday 2 to 5 p.m. and Saturday noon to 2 p.m. from March to October, and Thursday and Friday noon to 2 p.m. from November to February. Social play only. No street address is published, so it has no page here.

Does it cost anything to play?

No fee is published for any of these three parks, and no source states that they are free either, so cost is recorded as not stated. The prices Cary does publish, $8 an hour at Cary Tennis Park and $10 an hour per court at Middle Creek, are for two venues that are not on this page.
