Pickleball Courts in Tallahassee, FL

The City of Tallahassee publishes nothing about parking at any of the seven venues on this page. The word does not appear on the pickleball page, and the community centre pages give hours and a phone number without mentioning a lot.

Four of the seven venues are community centres with the courts outside the building. Walker-Ford and McLean are open Monday to Saturday 9:00am to 9:00pm, and the Sue McCollum centre in Lafayette Park Monday to Friday 9:00am to 9:00pm and Saturday from 1:00pm. That clock matters at Lafayette Park, because paddles and balls are "available inside the Sue McCollum Community Center only during regular office hours". The McLean page lists "two comfort stations", the one mention of restrooms at any published venue.

Tallahassee publishes a weekly timetable for its outdoor courts, and the timetable is the peak hours answer. The rule is stated once: "All Outdoor Courts are First-Come First-Play except during the times noted below". Open Play is free and drop-in. Reserved Play is booked and paid for.

At LeVerne Payne, Open Play runs Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings 8:00am-12:00pm for beginners and advanced beginners, with an intermediate session Saturday 2:00pm-5:00pm. At Tom Brown Park it runs Monday and Wednesday 8:00am-12:00pm and Sunday 8:00am-12:00pm and 5:00pm-8:30pm, with Reserved Play filling the weekday evenings. Winthrop Park has Reserved Play and no Open Play at all. Jake Gaither carries the one clock time hours line in the city, "Outdoor FCFP: 8:00am - 9:00pm Daily, Closed on Sunday".

Inside Open Play the "RACK" sets the order, games go to 11 and win by 2, and drop to 9 points once six players are waiting. Outside any session, first come play carries a 90 minute limit when others are waiting.

The City names no surface for any pickleball court in Tallahassee. The nearest it comes is a rule at Winthrop Park, whose courts are for "tennis, pickleball and any other sports that will not damage the surface or nets of the courts".

What the City does describe is the hardware. LeVerne Payne has "2 courts with adjustable net straps, 4 courts with portable nets if needed and all have painted lines". McLean's two have adjustable net straps and painted lines, and Lafayette Park's two have net tie-downs. Eight of Tom Brown's twelve sit on tennis courts 1 to 4, and Winthrop's six are multi-purpose as well, so fourteen of the thirty-three outdoor courts are tennis courts taking pickleball.

The one statement about condition is a closure, and it is stale. McLean's line still reads "Due to scheduled resurfacing, both the outdoor tennis and pickleball courts at jack mclean will be unavailable for use until december 5, 2025."

Thirty-four courts across seven City venues, thirty-three of them outdoors and one inside Jake Gaither Community Center. Tom Brown Park's twelve is the largest published set. Tallahassee is the third Florida city on this site after Cape Coral and Tampa, the first in Leon County, and the city that puts Florida over the three-city threshold for a state page.

The City writes more about how play is organised than most. It is the first operator on this site to publish a written open-play rotation rule: the "RACK" sets the order, games go to 11, and to 9 once six players are waiting. LeVerne Payne and Tom Brown publish as free, because the City schedules Open Play there and writes that "all Open Play sessions are drop-in and free". The other five are unpriced first come courts.

Five venues the City lists are not published. The largest is Four Oaks Park, six courts "used for pickleball only" at an address, "5151 Four Oaks Boulevard", that neither the Census address file nor OpenStreetMap can find.
