Veterans Park has twelve courts on the City's line: "Hybrid location: 8 pickleball courts on 1 tennis court and 4 dedicated pickleball courts." That is the largest count in Long Beach, with the largest share of it shared. Eight of the twelve are lines on one tennis court and belong to whoever the signage favours; four are pickleball courts whatever is happening beside them. First come, first served, in a 14.3-acre park with restrooms.

Best if you want dedicated courts and a stated day

DeForest Park has "8 dedicated courts", the largest dedicated set in the city, and is the one park whose page states hours for the park itself: "Dawn to Dusk". Restrooms are listed. The pickleball sits on the 15 City-owned acres of a 49.6-acre site, the rest of which is the DeForest Wetlands and nature trail. Eight dedicated courts is a rotation, not a queue for a tennis court.

Best if you want to play after dark

The El Dorado Park Tennis & Pickleball Center is the one Long Beach venue where the City states lighting, "8 Pickleball Courts, Fully Lighted", with "NO LIGHT FEES", and the one with a price: $5 per person for drop-in play of up to three hours, $10 per court per hour to reserve. Drop-in pickleball ran Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Friday 6 to 9 p.m. when the page was read.

Parking

Long Beach publishes nothing about parking at any of these eight venues. The word does not appear on the City's pickleball page and it does not appear on any of the six park pages that exist. Junipero Beach and Bayshore Park have no directory page at all.

The pickleball page places Marina Vista Park at "Colorado St. & Santiago"; the park's own page gives "5355 Eliot St.", which is the address published here. El Dorado Park West and the El Dorado Park Tennis & Pickleball Center share 2800 Studebaker Road and are two different sets of courts under two different rules.

When to turn up

The City publishes one rule for timing, on its pickleball page: "NO reservations at this time. All courts (except those at Billy Jean King and El Dorado Tennis Center) are first-come, first-served and court signage regarding shared use must be observed." Twenty-five of the forty-eight courts are shared with something else, and on those the signage settles who plays.

Hours are stated at two venues. DeForest Park's page reads "Park Hours: Dawn to Dusk". The El Dorado Park Tennis & Pickleball Center opens 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at weekends. Its pickleball drop-in, as the page stood when read, ran "Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8 to 11 am, and Friday evenings from 6 to 9pm".

What you will actually find

The City names no surface for any pickleball court in Long Beach and says nothing about nets. What it writes instead is on every line. Long Beach is one of the few operators on this site that writes "dedicated" or "dual-striped" against every venue it lists.

Read line by line, the dedicated courts are eight at DeForest Park, four each at Silverado Park, Veterans Park and Marina Vista Park, two at Junipero Beach and one at Bayshore Park, twenty-three in all. The City's own sentence at the top of the page says "Currently there are 24 dedicated pickleball courts in Long Beach", one more than its list adds to. This page publishes the list rather than the total.

Getting into a game

Forty-eight courts across eight City venues, twenty-three of them dedicated on the City's own per-venue wording. Long Beach is the third California city on this site, after Irvine and Huntington Beach, and the first in Los Angeles County.

Price appears once. The tennis centre is priced: "$5 per person for drop-in play (up to three hours), while private pickleball court reservations are $10 per court per hour". The El Dorado centre is the first venue on this site priced per person for drop-in pickleball with a separate per-court reservation rate, and the City applies the same rates to both of its tennis centres.

How many pickleball courts does Long Beach have?

Forty-eight, across eight City venues: 12 at Veterans Park, 8 each at DeForest Park, Marina Vista Park and the El Dorado Park Tennis & Pickleball Center, 4 at Silverado Park, 3 each at El Dorado Park West and Bayshore Park, and 2 at Junipero Beach. Twenty-three are dedicated on the City's per-venue lines, while the City's own summary sentence says 24.

Is it free to play in Long Beach?

Not stated at any park. The City calls its park courts first come, first served, which is a play format rather than a price. The one stated price is at the El Dorado Park Tennis & Pickleball Center: "$5 per person for drop-in play (up to three hours)" and "$10 per court per hour" for a private pickleball reservation.

Why are Somerset Park, the Billie Jean King Tennis Center and Whaley Park not listed?

Three different reasons. Somerset Park's address, "1500 E. Carson", is placed by the Census geocoder in the neighbouring city of Carson. The Billie Jean King Tennis Center is credited with four shared-use courts on the City's pickleball page and "8 Pickleball Courts, Fully Lighted" on its own, and two City numbers cannot both be published. Whaley Park's line states no count at all.
