Pickleball Courts in Huntington Beach, CA

Huntington Beach publishes nothing about parking at any of these four parks. The word does not appear in the pickleball block of the City's Park Amenities page, which gives each venue one line: a name, a street address and a count. It does not appear on the Tennis & Pickleball Information page either.

The same amenities page does name three of the four parks under "CITY PARKS WITH A RESTROOM": Edison Park, Marina Park and Worthy Park. Boardwalk Park is not on that list, and that is recorded here as a silence rather than a no. The planning fact that matters more than parking is light. The City states that none of these courts is lit, so every visit is a daylight visit.

The City publishes no hours for its pickleball courts, no busy periods, no rotation rule and no league night. What it publishes instead is a heading that does the work of a schedule: "CITY PARKS WITH A PICKLEBALL COURT (NO LIGHTING)". A weekday evening game is possible here in June and not in December.

The trap to avoid is the tennis page. It lists lighted tennis courts at Edison and Marina, at the same street addresses as two of the pickleball venues, open "Dusk to 10 p.m. nightly". Those lines sit under the heading "Lighted Tennis Courts & Handball/Racquetball Courts" and do not apply to the pickleball courts.

The City names no surface anywhere in its pickleball record. Each venue gets one line on the Park Amenities page, and that line holds a name, an address and a number of courts. There is no word for what the courts are made of, whether they are dedicated or painted onto something else, or how they are kept.

The page does show that pickleball is counted separately from tennis. Edison Park and Marina Park appear under both headings; Worthy Park and Boardwalk Park appear under pickleball and not under tennis. Whether the pickleball courts at Edison or Marina share ground with the tennis courts is something the City does not say.

Thirteen courts across four City parks, none of them lit, and every one of them stated in a single four-line block on the City's Park Amenities page. Edison Park, Marina Park and Worthy Park hold four courts each; Boardwalk Park holds one. Nothing was refused.

The distinctive fact about this city is what it says no to. Huntington Beach adds four stated negatives in one heading, more than the directory previously held in prose, and it is the first city here where the operator states that no published court is lit.

What the City does not say is nearly everything else. It publishes no hours, no price, no surface, no parking and no indoor or outdoor answer. Its Tennis & Pickleball Information page prices reserved tennis courts and never prices or frees a pickleball court, which is why Huntington Beach is not recorded as free.
